Monday bagua courses at Finsbury Park are designed to immerse students in the monastic, Pre-birth Bagua tradition, which has largely been taught in secret in China and is not available in any other bagua school in the West of which we are aware. Bagua is the original art practised to manifest the eight energies of the I Ching to merge and blend with change–the only known constant in the universe. The study of of these energies eventually leads to an understanding of the nature of self, others and the natural world in which we live.

Paul will offer two tracks of study with both groups receiving instruction and hands-on corrections. Breathing and meditation practices may be incorporated to help boost relaxation, presence and qi development.

Track 1 – Mud Stepping & the Swimming Dragon Body Single Palm Change

Beginners – Bagua is for those in relatively sound physical, emotional and mental health, otherwise you can sever mind-body trust and injure yourself in the process. You must have a healthy-ish body that is free from knee or lower back problems at a minimum.

Training in this group will focus on deep and systematic teachings of foundational techniques: Circle Walking, energy postures and the Spingle Palm Change imbued with nei gong. These practices are well known in China, in both the monastic bagua and martial bagua zhang traditions, for developing incredible health, strength, vitality, and an open and clear mind.

Track 2 – Eight Mother Palms & the I Ching

Existing Bagua Stylists – have the choice of reviewing and developing the fundamentals within the beginning group, or moving onto the “Continuous Palm Changes” group, where we’ll revolve around various versions of the Eight Mother Palms with a focus on deeper aspects of manifesting spherical energy. As we work through the series, we train one Palm at a time and review palms previously covered. In this way, the specific qualities of each Palm Change can be developed to manifest the eight energies of the I Ching.

Prerequisites: To join this more advanced group, you must have already developed skill in Mud stepping, the basic energy postures and the Single Palm Change.

A Certificate of Attendance is available on request.

Paul Cavel has taught bagua since 1995 and has been a senior bagua student of Bagua Lineage Holder Bruce Frantzis since 2004, training in-depth with his teacher in both private and public tuition for more than 20 years–including all Eight Mother Palms, as well as the monastic tradition.
